Why Is This Front Page News?

The top story on the Sun Times website by staff reporter Tina Sfondeles has the headline "1000 Cops May Face Discipline For Viewing Sex Case Reports." Really? This is front page news? If the media is so desperate to publish a story about the Chicago Police every day, how about one highlighting some of the great work being done every single day. I guess that's not a story.

Gang Beatdown Video Shown To Jury

The Chicago Tribune's Annie Sweeney reports that a gang beatdown video was recently shown to a federal jury. The beatdown came apparently after the victim "failed to follow through on an order from one of the four ranking Latin King members now on trial in federal court in Chicago." The article states that "Gang literature, entered into evidence earlier at the trial, demands loyalty to a gang hierarchy. It references violations and protecting neighborhoods with guns." When gang members will do this to one of their own, is it any surprise that citizens are scared to report gang crime in their neighborhood?

LA County Sheriff's Department Using New iPhone App To Gather Crime Tips

Very cool story - the LA County Sheriff's Department announced it is hooked up to a new iPhone app - "TipSubmit" - which allows people to use their iPhone to submit anonymous and secure tips. What a great idea! Would be great it this catches on. CPD should look into this. Anything that can help chip away at the "Snitches Get Stitches" mentality is a plus.

Dying Gang Member Breaks "No Snitch" Code

Interesting article in the Sun-Times about a dying gang member who broke the "NO SNITCH" code by fingering the fellow gang member that shot him. Not really a surprise, considering the guy was dying. No risk or fear of retaliation. Show us some neighbors that start telling the police about gang banger crimes and we will be more impressed.

Northwestern University Statement Regarding David Protess

HERE is the full statement by Alan K. Cubbage, Vice President for University Relations, in regard to Northwestern University actions regarding David Protess, Professor of Journalism.

We found this portion of the statement to be quite telling:

"As just one example, in December 2009, Protess sent them a falsified communication in an attempt to hide the fact that the student memos had been shared with Mr. McKinney's lawyers. The communication included what Protess said was a copy of a November 2007 email, unredacted save for removal of "personal information," that he had sent to his program assistant. The email copy he provided stated that "My position about memos, as you know, is that we don't keep copies. . . " However, examination of the original 2007 email, which was only recently obtained by the University, revealed that the original wording actually was: "My position about memos, as you know, IS THAT WE SHARE EVERYTHING WITH THE LEGAL TEAM, and don't keep copies. . . "  (emphasis added).
